nine hours Narita Airport Capsule Hotel Review | A Lifesaver for Early Morning Flights

Narita Airport has quite a few flights departing as early as 7 or 8 a.m. The fares and schedules can look pretty tempting, but once you actually book one, another question immediately comes to mind:

How early do I need to leave Tokyo to catch my flight?

If you’re staying in central Tokyo, getting to Narita Airport already takes a fair amount of time. And if your flight leaves shortly after 7 a.m., even the first train of the day might not get you to the airport early enough for check-in.

In situations like this, instead of stressing over how to get to Narita in the middle of the night, I personally prefer staying near the airport the night before.

This time, I had a 7:30 a.m. flight to Ishigaki Island. So I decided to stay at nine hours Narita Airport (ナインアワーズ成田空港). A capsule hotel located right at Narita Airport Terminal 2.

And its biggest advantage is exactly that: it’s actually inside the airport!

There’s no need to rely on a hotel shuttle or worry about catching an early-morning bus. You can simply wake up, freshen up, pack your things, and head straight to the terminal for your flight.

Even better, I booked my stay about six months in advance and managed to get a room for less than ¥5,000 for the night.

* 5,000 JPY (≈ $31.65 USD / £23.90 GBP / €28.25 EUR)

In this article, I’ll share my full experience staying at nine hours Narita Airport. Including its location, check-in process, lockers, shower facilities. And, of course, the most important part:

what it’s actually like sleeping in one of those futuristic capsule pods.

I’ll also explain why I chose to stay directly at the airport this time, instead of booking a regular hotel around Narita Station.

Note: For privacy reasons, I wasn’t able to take photos in some areas of the hotel. So a few of the images featured in this article are official photos provided by nine hours.

nine hours Narita Airport is located on B1F of Parking Garage P2, right next to Narita Airport Terminal 2. It’s in the public area before security and is directly connected to Terminal 2. Narita Airport also lists it as an accommodation facility with 24-hour access.

It’s especially convenient if you’re arriving by train. Once you exit Narita Airport Terminal 2·3 Station (Airport Terminal 2 Station) on the JR or Keisei lines, you’ll find signs pointing toward nine hours. Simply follow them and you’ll reach the hotel without ever having to leave the airport complex.

This was a huge plus for me. When I arrive at Narita Airport with a large suitcase, the last thing I want to do is figure out where to catch a hotel shuttle, check when the last shuttle leaves, or drag my luggage for another long walk.

At nine hours, once you arrive at the airport, you can basically put your luggage straight into a lockable locker, take a shower, and get ready for bed.

Why I Chose to Stay at nine hours Narita Airport

My decision to stay at nine hours this time actually had a lot to do with how I planned my Ishigaki trip.

I was traveling to Ishigaki Island with a group of family and friends, but no one else in the group dives. Since we were already making the trip all the way to Ishigaki, I still really wanted to squeeze in some time underwater. So in the end, I decided to fly out one day earlier than everyone else.

I booked a 7:30 a.m. flight from Narita Airport to Ishigaki. The plan was to arrive around noon, go diving that afternoon, and then meet up with my family and friends flying in from Taiwan and different parts of Japan the following day.

But this actually wasn’t my first time taking that 7:30 a.m. flight.

The last time

I went to Ishigaki with friends for a four-day, three-night trip. We took the exact same early-morning flight. Back then, we stayed at a hotel near Narita Station the night before.

There are quite a few hotels around Narita Station that offer free early-morning airport shuttles. Which is already pretty convenient if you have an early flight. But after trying it once, I realized there was still one problem:

you still have to wake up ridiculously early.

You need to get up, pack your luggage, check out, and make sure you’re ready in time for the hotel shuttle. Even though we had specifically stayed in Narita the night before to make things easier, we still ended up dragging ourselves out of bed half-asleep to catch a bus the next morning.

So when I realized I’d be taking another 7:30 a.m. flight this time, I thought, if I’m already paying for an extra night just because of an early flight, why not simply sleep at the airport?

That’s what made me choose nine hours Narita Airport this time.

The hotel is right next to Terminal 2. Once you arrive at Narita Airport Terminal 2·3 Station by JR or Keisei Railway, all you need to do is follow the signs to reach the hotel.

You can arrive at the airport the night before, take a shower, get some sleep. And when you wake up the next morning, you’re already at the airport.

For someone like me who simply wanted a comfortable place to get a few hours of sleep before an early-morning flight, I actually found this setup much more practical than staying at a regular airport hotel.

Can You Stay Here If Your Flight Departs from Terminal 1?

My flight the next morning actually departed from Terminal 1, but I still chose to stay at nine hours in Terminal 2 the night before.

So even if your flight doesn’t depart from Terminal 2, there’s no need to rule out this capsule hotel right away.

You’ll just need to allow some extra time to travel between terminals the next morning. This is especially important if you have an early flight. I’d recommend checking how to get between the terminals and the operating hours of the transportation options the night before, rather than trying to figure everything out right after you wake up.

How to Check In at nine hours Narita Airport

The overall design of nine hours is extremely simple and minimalist.

There’s no fancy hotel lobby. Instead, as soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by the brand’s signature black-and-white minimalist interior. It almost feels like stepping into a futuristic space station.

Check-in at nine hours Narita Airport currently starts at 2:00 p.m., while check-out is by 10:00 a.m. the following morning. If you expect to arrive after midnight, the hotel recommends contacting them in advance so your reservation isn’t treated as a no-show.

Once you’ve checked in, you can enter the accommodation area. Which is separated into male and female sections.

The concept behind nine hours is actually very straightforward. Everything you need for an overnight stay is divided into three main areas:

Locker → Shower → Sleeping Pod

That’s basically it. There aren’t many extra facilities. You store your luggage, take a shower, get some sleep, and head straight to your flight the next morning.

It might feel a little too basic for a regular vacation stay, but if your main goal is simply to get some sleep before an early-morning flight, it’s pretty much exactly what you need.

Where Do You Put Your Luggage? Locker Space

After entering the accommodation area, you’ll first come across the locker space. Simply find the locker that matches the number assigned to you at check-in.

As a general rule, large luggage isn’t allowed inside the capsule sleeping area, so you’ll need to leave it in your locker. It’s also a good idea to keep your valuables secured inside.

That said, the sleeping pods are actually more spacious than I expected, so I personally brought my small carry-on bag into the pod with me.

The hotel provides the basic essentials you’ll need for your stay, including:

・Bath towel and face towel
・Sleepwear
・Slippers
・Earplugs

Showers & Washbasin Area

One of the things people might worry about most when staying at a capsule hotel is the shared bathroom situation.

But my overall impression of nine hours was that everything felt clean, simple, and well maintained.

You won’t have a private bathroom inside your capsule, of course, but each shower is in its own enclosed stall. So you still have plenty of privacy while showering.

The shower stalls are already stocked with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, while hair dryers are available in the washbasin area.

So if you’re only staying for one night, there’s really no need to bring a whole bag of shower products from home.

Once you’ve showered and changed into the provided sleepwear, all that’s left to do is crawl into your capsule and get some sleep!

What Is It Like Sleeping in a nine hours Capsule?

The most iconic feature of nine hours has to be its rows of white sleeping pods. They really do look like something straight out of a sci-fi movie.

If you’ve never stayed at a capsule hotel before, you might be wondering: “Is it going to feel ridiculously cramped inside?”

Narita Airport Accommodation Capsule Hotel Narita Airport Terminal 2 nine hours Surprisingly spacious inside the capsule
Surprisingly spacious inside the capsule | Selfie by Tsubaki

Once I actually crawled inside, though, I found it much more spacious than I expected. Although, to be fair, that might partly be because I’m only 157 cm tall!

According to the official specifications, a standard sleeping pod measures approximately 105 cm wide × 215 cm deep × 102 cm high. Inside, you’ll find a mattress, pillow, duvet, power outlet, and lighting that you can adjust to your preferred brightness.

The space is designed purely for sleeping, so there’s no desk, chair, or extra room to move around like you’d have in a regular hotel room.

But once I lay down, I didn’t really get that uncomfortable feeling of being “stuffed into a box.”

The interior has a rounded design without too many sharp corners, which makes it feel more like a small cocoon than a box. And with a depth of 215 cm, most people should have enough room to lie down comfortably.

There is one important thing to keep in mind, though: the sleeping pods at the Narita Airport location don’t have USB-A charging ports. There’s only a standard power outlet.

So don’t forget to bring your charging adapter!

How Good Is the Soundproofing?

This is probably one of the biggest concerns people have about staying in a capsule hotel.

The capsules aren’t completely enclosed rooms. The entrance is covered by a roll-down screen. And due to regulations, the capsules themselves cannot be locked.

Naturally, the soundproofing can’t compare with a regular hotel room. You may hear people nearby packing their belongings, walking around, or even snoring.

If you’re sensitive to noise, I’d recommend picking up a pair of the free earplugs available near the entrance, or bringing your own if you already have a pair you’re comfortable sleeping with.

For me, nine hours isn’t really somewhere you stay for a relaxing “airport hotel getaway.” Its purpose is much simpler: to give people with an early flight a proper place to lie down and get a few hours of sleep.

And when I look at it that way, I think it does the job extremely well.

Heading Straight to Your Flight the Next Morning

Taking the train from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 early in the morning

This is probably the biggest advantage of staying at nine hours: when you wake up, there’s no need to drag your suitcase onto a train. And then spend another hour traveling to Narita Airport.

You simply wake up, freshen up, get dressed. Then pack your luggage, check out, and you’re already at the airport.

Whenever I have an early flight from Narita and stay in central Tokyo, I usually spend the night before calculating everything: “What time is the first train?”, “What if I miss it?”, “What time do I need to wake up?”, and “Will I have enough time to make my connection?”

Once you stay directly at the airport, most of those worries disappear.

Even though my flight this time departed from Terminal 1, I still found staying at Narita Airport the night before much more convenient.

Terminals 1 and 2 are connected by a walkway, and it takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes on foot. If you don’t want to walk, you can do what I did. Take the Keisei Main Line from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1. The ride itself takes only about three minutes.

Just keep in mind that JR trains don’t start running as early. So make sure to check the morning timetable in advance.

Not Staying Overnight? Day Use & Shower-Only Options

nine hours Narita Airport isn’t just for overnight stays.

If you have a long layover and want somewhere to lie down for a while, or you’ve just gotten off a long-haul flight and desperately want a shower, the hotel also offers Day Use and shower-only plans.

According to the rates currently listed on the official website:

Day Use

First hour: ¥1,500

Each additional hour: ¥500

* 1,500 JPY (≈ $9.50 USD / £7.17 GBP / €8.48 EUR)

Shower Only
Up to 1 hour: ¥1,000

* 1,000 JPY (≈ $6.33 USD / £4.78 GBP / €5.65 EUR)

Shower facilities are included free of charge with both overnight stays and Day Use.

If you’re arriving in Japan on a red-eye flight or have a long layover at Narita, these short-stay options can be surprisingly useful.

How Much Does nine hours Narita Airport Cost?

Room rates at nine hours aren’t fixed. Prices vary depending on the date, day of the week, and availability.

Personally, I’d recommend booking as soon as your flight is confirmed if you already know you’ll be departing early in the morning.

After all, the biggest advantage of this hotel is its location right at Narita Airport. Naturally, many of the people booking it have exactly the same reason: they need somewhere convenient to sleep before an early flight.

Narita Airport also notes that nine hours may be fully booked on the day, so advance reservations are recommended.

I booked mine around six months in advance and paid less than ¥5,000 for the night.

* 5,000 JPY (≈ $31.65 USD / £23.90 GBP / €28.25 EUR)

For “just a capsule,” that might not sound incredibly cheap at first.

But once I factored in the travel time I saved and, more importantly, the fact that I didn’t have to wake up at three or four in the morning just to make my way to the airport.

I felt it was absolutely worth the money.

Who Is nine hours Narita Airport Best For?

After staying here myself, I think nine hours Narita Airport is particularly suitable for:

・Travelers catching an early-morning flight from Narita

・Travelers arriving at Narita late at night who don’t want to head into central Tokyo

・Solo travelers with simple accommodation needs

・Passengers with long layovers who want to shower or rest

・Travelers who don’t want to spend too much on an airport hotel for just one night

・Anyone who values convenience and location more than having a large room

On the other hand, if you’re a very light sleeper, care a lot about soundproofing, or want enough space to open your suitcase and slowly organize everything in your room, you’ll probably be more comfortable at a regular hotel around Narita Airport.

My Review: Would I Stay at nine hours Narita Airport Again?

If you asked me whether nine hours is a hotel where you stay to treat yourself and enjoy the room, then obviously, no.

There’s no spacious room, no bathtub, and no big hotel breakfast waiting for you in the morning.

But it gets all the things that matter most for an overnight stay before a flight exactly right.

It’s incredibly convenient, you can take a shower, you have a proper place to lie down and sleep, and when you wake up, you’re already at Narita Airport.

And I think that’s where the real value of nine hours lies.

Anyone who lives in central Tokyo will probably understand the feeling. When you spot a flight departing Narita at seven or eight in the morning, sometimes your first thought isn’t even about the airfare.

It’s:

“…Wait, what time am I going to have to wake up?”

If you don’t want to get up in the middle of the night and drag your suitcase onto the first train of the day, staying directly at Narita Airport the night before is definitely worth considering.

This time, I woke up, packed my luggage, checked out, and headed straight to Terminal 1 for my flight.

At least this way, your trip can start after a decent night’s sleep instead of starting with a stressful race to the airport.

nine hours Narita Airport FAQ

Is nine hours Narita Airport actually inside the airport?

Yes. nine hours Narita Airport is located on B1F of Parking Garage P2, right next to Narita Airport Terminal 2, and is directly connected to the terminal. If you arrive by JR or Keisei Railway, get off at Narita Airport Terminal 2·3 Station and simply follow the signs inside the airport. There’s no need to take a separate hotel shuttle.

Is nine hours Narita Airport a good choice for a 7 or 8 a.m. flight?

Yes, and I think this is one of the biggest advantages of staying at nine hours Narita Airport. Getting from central Tokyo to Narita Airport takes time, and for particularly early flights, even the first train of the day may not get you there early enough for check-in.

By staying directly at the airport the night before, you can wake up, get ready, grab your luggage, and head straight to the terminal instead of traveling all the way from Tokyo in the middle of the night.

Can I stay at nine hours if my flight departs from Narita Terminal 1?

Yes. Although nine hours is located next to Terminal 2, you can still stay there if your flight departs from Terminal 1. In fact, my flight this time departed from Terminal 1 at 7:30 a.m.

Just keep in mind that transportation between the terminals may operate differently in the early morning. I recommend checking your options in advance and allowing enough time to get to Terminal 1.

Does nine hours Narita Airport have showers and toiletries?

Yes. The accommodation area has individual shower stalls and provides shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair dryers, bath towels, face towels, sleepwear, and slippers.

However, some amenities, including toothbrushes, razors, makeup remover, and skincare products, are available for an additional fee, so you may want to bring your own depending on what you need.

Are the capsules at nine hours Narita Airport quiet and comfortable?

The sleeping pods aren’t completely enclosed, so the soundproofing isn’t comparable to a regular hotel room. The entrance to each capsule is covered by a roll-down screen, which means you may hear other guests walking around, packing their luggage, or snoring. Free earplugs are available at the hotel.

As for comfort, I personally found the sleeping pod much more spacious than I expected. For a simple overnight stay before an early flight, it was more than enough for me.

However, if you’re a very light sleeper or particularly sensitive to noise, a regular hotel near Narita Airport may be a better option.
