A few years ago, I traveled to Atami for a solo trip. At the time, I only knew about the city’s hot springs, coastal views, and art museums, I had no idea there was a charming Showa-era style café called Momoyama-kan Retro View Café (展望レトロ喫茶 桃山館). It wasn’t until I saw a feature about it on TV that I learned it had only recently opened in 2022. I immediately saved it to my travel list!
This time, my boyfriend planned a birthday getaway to Izu, and since we passed through Atami on the way, I finally had the chance to visit. After experiencing it in person, I have to say, it was even more delightful than I expected. Best of all, this place still feels like a hidden gem. When we arrived, we were able to walk right in and get a seat with no waiting time. So I knew I had to write this post and share this fantastic spot with you. If you’re looking for a unique restaurant to visit in Atami, definitely consider adding this to your itinerary.

About Momoyama-kan Retro View Café

Momoyama-kan Retro View Café (展望レトロ喫茶 桃山館) is a nostalgic-themed complex that opened in 2022 and has quickly become one of Atami’s most unique spots. It offers the rare combination of vintage atmosphere, retro-style food, family-friendly entertainment, and stunning panoramic views, all under one roof. Designed with meticulous attention to detail, every corner is photo-worthy and invites you to slow down and soak in the Showa-era charm.
Since it’s still relatively new, it hasn’t been overrun by tourists yet. When I visited on a Saturday, we were able to grab a seat with almost no wait at all.
The building has three floors, all centered around the retro Showa aesthetic. The space is thoughtfully arranged to appeal to all ages, from adults to kids, and even pets are welcome. Even if you’re not planning to dine here, it’s worth stopping by to explore the retro snack shop or kill some time playing arcade games. And if you do have to wait for a table, there’s plenty to enjoy while you wait, it really makes the time fly.
How to Get to Momoyama-kan Retro View Café

Momoyama-kan is located just a short 5-minute walk from Atami Station, up a small hill behind the station. It’s very accessible. While the hill has a bit of an incline, it’s short and manageable for most people.

Before you even step inside, you’ll be greeted by a nostalgic façade full of Showa-style posters and bold signage that instantly transport you to another era. The attention to detail starts at the entrance, it sets the perfect tone for what’s inside.

First Floor|Retro Game Arcade & Mini Race Track

As soon as you step through the entrance of Momoyama-kan, you’re instantly transported to a Showa-era amusement arcade. This area, known as Momoyama Dōgi-jō, is a compact retro game zone filled with nostalgic machines like pinball, baseball pitching games, and more. Most games only cost 100 yen per play, instantly bringing back childhood memories.

Right next to it is the Atami Mini Race Track, where both adults and kids can race miniature cars. If you’re a racing fan or a model car collector, you’re going to love this spot, t’s so much fun!

There’s also a mock-up of a classic Japanese tobacco kiosk called the Kawasaki Cigarette Shop.
My boyfriend put on a bald-head prop and pretended to be an old man selling cigarettes. But the look was so unflattering that he insisted I pixelate his face in the photos, haha!
Second Floor|Café Momoyama & 08 Shop Retro Snacks

The second floor is the heart of the dining and shopping area. If you’re planning to eat here, I recommend heading straight to the second floor upon arrival to take a number ticket for your table.

Café Momoyama is a Showa-themed retro café where everything from the décor to the menu exudes nostalgia.

The star dish here is the Special Japanese Combo Plate (トルコライス). This “Turkish Rice” (as it’s called in Japanese) is actually a hearty combo of hamburger steak, pasta, and fried rice all on one plate. It’s super filling and feels very retro-Japanese diner.

We also ordered the special pork cutlet curry rice and an old-school custard pudding for dessert, everything was absolutely delicious!

They also serve a lineup of colorful soda floats, a classic drink of Japan’s old-school cafés. Think vibrant green melon soda or soft pink cherry soda, super popular with customers. The young Japanese girls sitting next to us each ordered a different color drink, it was so cute and retro!
That said, since my boyfriend and I usually don’t drink soda, we skipped them this time, but I thought I’d still share this tip for those who want the full vintage café experience.

Before or after your meal, take time to browse the 08 Shop and Momoyama Plaza next door. You’ll find classic Japanese snacks, toys, stickers, and old-school ramune sodas.

It felt just like the old-school dagashi shops my grandma used to take us to when we visited her as kids. Everything was so nostalgic, soccer ball chocolates, Hello Kitty candy tins, I wanted to buy them all!
Third Floor|Rooftop Mini Amusement Park & Pet-Friendly Seating

Finally, the third floor features a small, open-air rooftop amusement space, complete with retro-style ride-ons like fire trucks, mini buses, and merry-go-rounds. While the area is compact, it’s a great little play zone, perfect for families with kids or pets.

You can even bring your food up from the second floor and enjoy your meal with a panoramic view of Atami’s coastline. There are tables set up so you can eat while keeping an eye on your little ones as they play.
Fireworks Season Special Entry

Normally, Momoyama-kan is open until 5:00 PM, but during Atami’s fireworks festival nights, the café stays open late until 9:00 PM, offering limited-entry fireworks viewing tickets.
It’s a paid event with a cap on attendees, but tickets are only 1,000 yen per person, which is honestly a great deal considering the unobstructed views of the fireworks show you get from the rooftop!
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning a trip to Atami and looking for a place to relax, enjoy some nostalgic vibes, take cool photos, and grab a tasty meal, I highly recommend visiting Momoyama-kan Retro View Café. It’s full of Showa-era charm, offers beautiful ocean views, and welcomes both kids and pets. Plus, there are fun surprises waiting around every corner.
