When it comes to the most beautiful starry skies in Japan, many people might immediately think of Achi Village in Nagano. But in fact, Ishigaki Island is the only place in Japan officially certified as an International Dark Sky Park, making it the top destination for stargazing! Especially in areas with zero light pollution, the sweeping Milky Way and star-filled skies are absolutely breathtaking.
During our five-day trip to Ishigaki, my friend and I made sure to join a Ishigaki Island Stargazing & jungle night tour, and we were lucky enough to see the Milky Way with our naked eyes, it was such a moving experience! I really want to share this tour with everyone planning a trip to Ishigaki, because it’s truly one of the must-do nighttime adventures on the island.

《Why Go Stargazing in Ishigaki?》

Ishigaki Island has one of the rarest natural environments in the world. It is the only place in Japan certified by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) thanks to its low-latitude location and strict control over light pollution. That makes it one of the best places in Japan to view southern constellations and the Milky Way.

Once the sun sets, all it takes is stepping away from artificial lights to see a sky full of stars, and even the Milky Way! With a professional tour guide, you’ll be taken deep into local tropical forests or onto hidden beaches that only locals know about. From there, you can clearly see the Milky Way arching across the sky in all its brilliance.

I’ve done stargazing trips in places like Izu Ōshima and Mt. Fuji before, and they were beautiful too. But after visiting Ishigaki, I honestly haven’t found a better stargazing experience in Japan. (Though maybe Achi Village will surprise me one day!)

Why Did I Choose This Ishigaki Island Stargazing Tour?

Our main plan for this trip was to explore Iriomote, Yubu, and Taketomi Islands (read my [Ishigaki Island Hopping content]), but while researching the itinerary, I discovered that Ishigaki is famous for its starry skies. That’s when I found this unique nighttime jungle & stargazing experience.

I had considered doing a nighttime stargazing cruise, but in the end, the idea of combining jungle exploration with stargazing felt more exciting, so I booked the experience I’m introducing in this article.

This tour doesn’t just take you into the jungle, it also includes visits to elevated coral caves and secluded local beaches, and your guide will help you spot rare endangered species found only in Ishigaki. It was absolutely worth it.

My Tour Experience in Ishigaki Island

Since the entire tour takes place at night, it was quite hard to get clear photos, so please forgive the blurry ones in this post!

Meeting at Ishigaki Port & Transfer to the Jungle

The meeting spot for the night tour was right at the main entrance of Ishigaki Port. Luckily, our hostel was only a 15-minute walk away. When we arrived, we immediately spotted a group of people gathered near a big red mailbox, easy to find. The guide checked everyone’s names there.

The tour company I booked with also provided rain boots if needed, but the soil was dry that day, so we just wore our own shoes.

Once everyone had gathered, we boarded a small tour van. After a 15–30 minute ride, we arrived at the edge of a mountainous area. The entrance felt immediately wild and untamed, there was a paved road, but everything else was completely natural. You could instantly feel we were really entering the jungle.

Into the Jungle with a Guide & Flashlight

Before heading in, the guide handed out flashlights and explained the route, safety rules, and what to expect. Then, we all stepped into the pitch-dark forest together.

Surprisingly, the jungle didn’t feel spooky at all. In fact, there was a thrilling sense of adventure. Aside from the sounds of our own footsteps on dried leaves and soil, we could hear the calls of frogs and insects, and occasionally the rustling of wildlife brushing against the trees.

Our guide introduced us to several nocturnal species along the way, Ryukyu tree frogs, night-active insects, and even a giant hermit crab, which is rarely seen.

The Unique Coral Rock Formations of Ishigaki

Not long into the walk, we began to see elevated coral reef formations, a unique feature of Ishigaki’s geology. Even overhead, we could spot coral rock structures that had been pushed up by tectonic activity. It’s not something you see on just any nature walk, and it really gives you a sense of place.

Our guide led us into a cave surrounded by these coral reef formations, and that’s where we finally spotted an endangered blue coconut crab!

It looked like something out of an animated fantasy movie, bright blue and almost magical. It was my first time seeing one in person, and it was absolutely fascinating. The guide even helped us snap a commemorative photo with it.

The Grand Finale: Stargazing on a Hidden Beach

After our jungle adventure, we were taken to a secret beach only known to locals. With no light pollution in sight, we turned off our flashlights, and as our eyes adjusted, the night sky exploded with stars.

It was easily one of the most stunning starry skies I’ve ever seen, so clear, in fact, that the arc of the Milky Way was fully visible to the naked eye. That moment became one of the most unforgettable memories of my entire Ishigaki trip.

As a side note, I used an iPhone 16 Pro to capture the night sky. Just set the camera to its maximum exposure (up to 30 seconds depending on ambient light), place your phone steadily on the ground, and if you can stay still for the full exposure, you’ll be amazed by the results. These are real photos, not composites!

This Ishigaki Island Starry sky & Jungle tour

was honestly the most surprising and awe-inspiring part of my Ishigaki adventure.

From the chance to observe the island’s unique volcanic and coral-based ecosystems, to standing under a sky full of stars and spotting endangered species like the blue coconut crab, this tour gave me a whole new perspective on Ishigaki.

I highly recommend this Ishigaki Island Stargazing Tour to anyone who loves nature, adventure, or off-the-beaten-path travel. You’ll get to see a side of Ishigaki that’s not in the guidebooks, and take home memories that will last a lifetime.
