Last Updated on 2026-03-01 by Tsubaki

It all started when my travel buddy Rebecca casually mentioned she wanted to ride a water buffalo cart on Yubu Island. That led me to discover a super cost-effective Ishigaki island-hopping pass that lets you freely travel by ferry between some of the most scenic islands in the Yaeyama archipelago: Iriomote, Yubu, and Taketomi. What makes this pass so convenient is that it doesn’t lock you into fixed departure times, you just need to check the ferry schedule and plan your connections accordingly.

It feels like joining a guided day tour, but with the freedom to customize your own itinerary. You can decide how long to stay on each island and which activities to enjoy. While each island definitely deserves a deeper visit, this pass is perfect for travelers short on time who still want to soak in the unique charm of multiple islands in a single day. After trying it myself, I found it incredibly worth it, so I’m sharing this guide to help you plan your own flexible island-hopping adventure!

About the Taketomi Island Free Walk Day Pass

Located in Okinawa Prefecture, Ishigaki Island is the main hub of the Yaeyama Islands. Surrounded by smaller islands, it’s the perfect launch point for island-hopping. Many travelers visiting Ishigaki also include stops at Iriomote, Yubu, and Taketomi for sightseeing and outdoor experiences. While ferry routes between the islands are well developed, there are multiple ferry companies and schedules to coordinate—so it can take some effort to plan everything yourself.

That’s why I highly recommend the Taketomi Free Walk Day Pass (竹富島フリーウォークプラン), which simplifies the entire process. This pass lets you visit all three of these scenic islands in one day without the hassle of buying separate tickets or worrying about transfer routes. The best part? You can choose your return time freely, giving you extra flexibility to enjoy your trip.

What’s Included in the Taketomi Free Walk Day Pass?

This convenient day pass is offered by Ishigaki Dream Tours (石垣島ドリーム観光). It allows you to move freely between the three must-visit Yaeyama islands, Iriomote, Yubu, and Taketomi, with the following itinerary:

・Depart from Ishigaki to Iriomote Island
・Take a mangrove cruise on the Nakama River (a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site)
・Ride a traditional water buffalo cart to Yubu Island
・Enjoy lunch on Yubu Island and explore at your leisure
・Transfer from Iriomote to Taketomi Island
・Free time to explore Taketomi
・Ferry back to Ishigaki Island at your chosen time

Since this pass is quite popular, I highly recommend booking in advance. Although KKday and Klook don’t currently offer the exact same transportation package mentioned in this article, you can still make a reservation through Japanese platforms that support bookings from overseas.

Highlights of Each Island

Iriomote Island

Iriomote is home to Japan’s largest mangrove forest, located along the Nakama River and designated as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. This pass includes a guided river cruise, where you’ll learn about the unique ecosystem while cruising deep into the lush mangrove jungle. It’s a rare chance to see this spectacular landscape up close.

Yubu Island

To get from Iriomote to Yubu, you simply cross a shallow stretch of ocean, so short you could technically walk it. Historically, locals used water buffalo carts as daily transportation, and that tradition continues today. Although Yubu Island now has no permanent residents and has been turned into a tropical botanical garden, the buffalo cart ride remains one of the most charming highlights.

You’ll see adorable buffalo cooling off in ponds, and during the cart ride, the driver will often strum a shamisen (Okinawan string instrument) and sing local folk songs. The gentle pace, music, and tropical breeze create a magical moment that feels like stepping back in time.

On the island, you’ll also find small shops selling handmade crafts and souvenirs. Take your time and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.

Taketomi Island

Taketomi Island is known for preserving Okinawa’s traditional red-tiled roof homes and peaceful village charm. The island is only about 9.2 km in circumference, making it easy to explore by rental bike, on foot, or via the local shuttle bus.

It’s not just the architecture that’s beautiful—the beaches here are absolutely stunning. However, do be mindful when visiting: some of the traditional homes are still inhabited, so please be respectful during your visit.

Advance Online Booking of the Island-Hopping Pass

Before departure, I booked the pass online and received a reservation code via email. On the day of the trip, all I had to do was show the code at the designated counter to exchange for the physical tickets. Since this island-hopping tour is quite popular and ferry seats are limited, I highly recommend booking in advance, you may not be able to purchase a ticket on the same day if it’s fully booked!

As soon as you disembark, you’ll see a huge sign reading World Natural Heritage, and the Nakama River mangrove cruise boat is already waiting at the dock. We didn’t have to wait at all, the schedule was perfectly arranged for a seamless transfer.

Pro Tip:

The ferry ride is about 50 minutes, and can be bumpy depending on the sea conditions. If you’re prone to motion sickness, make sure to take medication or bring seasickness remedies. My friend Rebecca didn’t prepare ahead and ended up napping through the ride, missing the stunning ocean views, what a shame!

Once everyone was seated, the cruise departed on time, ours left around 9:20 AM.

The entire mangrove cruise lasts about 40 minutes, filled with beautiful scenery and lively narration from the guide. Time flew by as we glided along the river, passing through dense networks of mangrove roots. We even spotted some birds and fish along the way.

Tourist Bus Transfer to the Water Buffalo Cart Boarding Area

After the cruise, we returned to Nakama Port (also known as Ōhara Port) to board a tourist shuttle bus that would take us to the water buffalo cart station for Yubu Island. The bus is mainly used to connect the two attractions and the ride only takes about 10 minutes, making it very quick and convenient.

Upon arrival, we saw rows of patiently waiting water buffalo carts, some buffaloes were calmly standing, while others lazily swished their tails to chase off bugs. The sight was both amusing and incredibly charming, instantly lifting our spirits.

Riding the Water Buffalo Cart to Yubu Island

The buffalo slowly trudged through the shallow tidal flats, accompanied by the soothing sound of traditional shamisen music. It truly felt like stepping back in time.

And here’s a funny detail, these buffaloes aren’t shy about doing their business on the go! The cart drivers come prepared with shields to block any flying surprises from the back… which made everyone laugh.

The cart ride took about 10 minutes, and we arrived on Yubu Island around 10:50 AM. From then until 12:20 PM, we had roughly two and a half hours of free time on the island.

The pass also includes a lunch voucher, which you can use at one of the restaurants on the island. Since Yubu is quite small, the free time is well-balanced, you can spend about an hour dining and an hour and a half strolling around. From what I remember, walking a full circle around Yubu Island only takes about 30 minutes, so there’s plenty of time to explore at a relaxed pace.

Lunch on Yubu Island

We arrived at Yubu Island around 10:50 AM, but since there was no set lunch time, heading straight to the restaurant felt a bit early. So we decided to take a stroll for about half an hour, exploring the tropical flora and narrow walking paths. After getting our bodies moving, it was the perfect time for lunch.

The lunch provided was a simple Japanese bento, and while it wasn’t anything particularly extraordinary, it was satisfying and thoughtfully prepared, especially considering it was included in the package.

Free Time on Yubu Island

After lunch, we continued exploring the island. Although Yubu no longer has any permanent residents, it once had a large enough population to require a school. The remains of the elementary school used by former residents still stand on the island today.

In addition to the history, the coastal scenery is absolutely stunning, lush greenery and views of the distant sea create a tropical atmosphere unique to Okinawa. The island itself is compact, and walking a full loop only takes about 30 minutes. With a meal and a leisurely walk, the 2.5-hour free time felt just right: well-paced and fulfilling without being rushed.

Returning to Iriomote by Water Buffalo Cart, Then Back to Nakama Port by Bus

After finishing our island walk, we returned to the cart station where we first arrived and boarded a water buffalo cart back to Iriomote. While there were quite a few people in line, the carts run frequently, so we barely had to wait.

Once back on Iriomote, we quickly boarded the tourist bus arranged by the tour operator, making for a smooth and seamless transfer. The schedule was well thought out and everything flowed nicely.

Ferry from Nakama Port (Iriomote) to Taketomi Port

By the time we had wrapped up our morning, from admiring mangroves on Iriomote to lunch and exploration on Yubu Island, it was just about time to head to Taketomi. We boarded the 1:25 PM ferry from Iriomote and got ready to spend a relaxed afternoon there.

Free Time on Taketomi Island

Our final stop was Taketomi Island, which we reached after a 20-minute ferry ride from Yubu.

Taketomi turned out to be much larger than we had expected. The scenery was so picturesque that we kept stopping for photos every few steps. The beach was especially breathtaking, we ended up staying until the very last ferry and didn’t manage to explore the entire island.

Unlike Yubu Island, where a full loop takes only 30 minutes, Taketomi takes nearly an hour to walk through, though it’s still compact enough to explore without a car. That said, there are so many things worth seeing and the beaches are so mesmerizing that walking the whole way can be physically exhausting.

So I’d recommend either renting a bicycle or taking the island’s shuttle bus. It’ll save you time and energy, and let you visit more places efficiently.

Return ferry options from Taketomi to Ishigaki are available at 3:10 PM, 4:00 PM, and 5:00 PM. Of course, we stayed on the island until the last possible moment and took the 5:00 PM ferry back. But if you prefer an earlier return, there are flexible options to suit your pace.

Thanks to this one-day island-hopping pass, we were able to experience three very different islands in a single day—from lush mangroves and traditional water buffalo carts to a scenic island village and pristine beaches. The itinerary felt rich and fulfilling, yet not rushed, and it made me want to return and explore each island in more depth next time.

For travelers with limited time but a desire to explore beyond Ishigaki, the Taketomi Free Walk One-Day Island-Hopping Pass is truly a recommendation I stand by!
