When it comes to Ishigaki’s nightlife, one of the most iconic experiences is spending an evening at a shamisen live izakaya in the bustling downtown area, singing and dancing with strangers who quickly turn into friends. Usagiya Ishigaki Main Branch (うさぎや) was one of the most unforgettable stops during my trip with Rebecca to Ishigaki (though honestly, every stop on this trip was amazing). A Japanese friend who had visited Ishigaki before recommended it to us, and I’m so glad they did. Not only is it full of Okinawan charm, but it also gives you the chance to sing, dance, and truly join in the fun with the locals and other guests.

Back when I casually posted about Usagiya on my private Instagram story, I was flooded with messages from friends asking for the name of the place. That’s why I decided to write this article, so if you ever visit Ishigaki, I highly recommend making time for Usagiya!

What Is a Shamisen Live Izakaya?

Okinawa (including Ishigaki) has a rich musical heritage, with the shamisen considered the soul of Okinawan music. Out of this tradition came the shamisen live izakaya, an interactive style of pub where live shamisen performances bring the night to life. They’ve become a favorite way for visitors to experience Okinawan culture.

Before this trip, I had no idea Ishigaki was famous for these kinds of izakaya. At places like Usagiya Ishigaki, local shamisen players perform nightly, filling the room with the sounds of island songs, lively Eisa dances (沖縄エイサー), and joyful Kachāshī dances (カチャーシー). While enjoying authentic Okinawan dishes and glasses of awamori, you can soak in the most genuine island vibes. This kind of cultural experience doesn’t just let you watch, it pulls you into the heart of Okinawan life, creating the kind of memories that stay with you long after the trip is over.

Usagiya sits on a corner in Ishigaki’s lively downtown district. From the outside it looks like a modest, tucked-away shop, but step inside and you’re immediately embraced by an Okinawan atmosphere.

The wooden interior is cozy and welcoming, with walls decorated with shamisen and other traditional Okinawan instruments.

What makes Usagiya truly special is its live shamisen performances every single night by local musicians. It’s a beloved gathering place for fans of Okinawan folk music. The atmosphere is intimate and friendly, you’ll hear classic island songs, watch traditional Eisa dance, and even find yourself joining the crowd in a spirited Kachāshī dance together. It’s not just dining; it’s a night of shared joy and culture.

Okinawan Vibes with Shamisen Live Music and Interactive Dance

The heart and soul of this place is without a doubt the high-energy shamisen live performance. The moment the music begins, the entire izakaya comes alive with rhythm and excitement. The musician passionately strums the shamisen while singing traditional island songs, instantly transporting you into the midst of a vibrant Okinawan festival.

What makes it even better is that it’s not just a performance you passively watch, it’s a full-on interactive experience that everyone can join.

The friendly staff enthusiastically lead the songs and dances, even teaching guests how to use Okinawan-style clappers. There’s nothing awkward about it, just pure fun. They move through the crowd, inviting guests to clap along, sway with simple dance steps, and before you know it, the entire restaurant is dancing together. The atmosphere turns into a cheerful, festive Okinawan-style party.

That night, we ended up dancing shoulder to shoulder with two sweet Japanese girls sitting at the next table. We started off a bit shy, but soon we were laughing, singing, and dancing together, it became one of the warmest and most unforgettable memories of our entire trip.

So here’s a tip: when you visit a live shamisen izakaya like this, don’t hold back, join in the music, the dancing, and the joy!

Usagiya Shamisen Live Show Schedule & Charges

Every evening at Usagiya, there are two shamisen live showtimes: 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Since performers are paid for their live music, there’s a small fee for the experience:

¥800 per adult (~$5.40 USD)
¥100 per child (~$0.70 USD)
Table charge: ¥300 per person (~$2.00 USD, free for children)

So aside from the food and drinks, the base charge per adult is ¥1,100 (~$7.50 USD). Depending on your appetite, you can then order as much (or as little) as you like.

Personally, I found it absolutely worth the price. You’re not just paying for music, you’re paying for the atmosphere, the cultural immersion, the laughter, and that special kind of shared joy you rarely get to experience while traveling.

Ordering, Okinawan Dishes, and Awamori

Usagiya uses a multilingual tablet ordering system, so even if you don’t speak Japanese, it’s super easy to place your order without any stress.

The menu includes a wide variety of authentic and affordable Okinawan dishes, Ishigaki beef yakiniku, sea grape salad, goya champuru (stir-fried bitter melon), and more. You’ll also find an impressive selection of local awamori and aged spirits.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t try the awamori this time since we had driven to the restaurant, but that just gives us one more reason to return.

As we had already tried many Okinawan classics like Ishigaki beef sushi and champuru earlier in the trip, we decided to order dishes we hadn’t had yet, and every single one exceeded our expectations.

We tried:

・Okinawan-style savory pancakes (沖縄風チヂミ)
Tuna Caesar salad
Grandma’s style chicken rice (おばぁのジューシー)
Grilled Ishigaki beef
Grilled fish

Every dish was flavorful, well-portioned, and perfect for sharing with a small group.

Final Thoughts

Our total bill for two people came to ¥7,840 ($53.30 USD), which was about ¥3,920 per person ($26.65 USD). After subtracting the ¥1,100 entry fee ($7.50 USD), the food alone cost ¥2,820 each ($19.15 USD), very reasonable for such a memorable night.

Usagiya isn’t just a place to enjoy Okinawan food, it’s a space where you can genuinely connect with local culture. There’s no barrier between travelers and locals here. With music and dance as the common language, everyone becomes friends, and I could truly feel the warm and welcoming spirit that makes Ishigaki so special.

If you’re planning a trip to Ishigaki, don’t miss the chance to spend an evening at this unforgettable izakaya. Just make sure to book in advance, it fills up nearly every night!
