Although Hong Kong isn’t very large, it has an extremely well-developed transportation network, and the Airport Express is one of the fastest and most efficient options. Designed specifically for travelers, this line departs from Hong Kong International Airport and passes through major business and tourist areas, stopping at five stations:

1. Airport Station
2. Tsing Yi Station

Special Perks for Octopus Card Users

Additionally, within one hour after exiting the Airport Express, you can enjoy a free MTR transfer (excluding Light Rail and Airport Express itself). This is especially convenient if you’re continuing on to your hotel or another destination.

For example, if you take the Airport Express to Hong Kong Station, you can transfer directly to the MTR to go to Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay, and other destinations, and that ride is free, making for a seamless connection! (Click here to check Free MTR Connections)

📌 Note: This benefit is only available to Octopus Card users. Those using QR code or paper tickets are not eligible.

What If You Bought the Wrong Station Ticket?

If you originally bought a ticket to Kowloon Station but later decided to continue on to Hong Kong Station, no worries, just go to a station service counter and pay the fare difference of HKD 10 (~USD 1.30) to exit smoothly.

This actually happened to me once! I didn’t have any cash on me and started to panic a bit. Although you can’t use an Octopus Card to pay the difference, you can use a credit card or other forms of payment, so there’s really no need to worry.

However, if you already bought a ticket to Hong Kong Station and want to get off early at Kowloon Station, you unfortunately can’t get a refund, you’ll just have to get off early and let the rest of the ticket go unused.

Special Services on the Airport Express

In-Town Check-In Service

Another amazing feature of the Airport Express is the In-Town Check-In service. If you’re flying with a participating airline (such as Cathay Pacific or Hong Kong Airlines), you can check in your luggage at Hong Kong or Kowloon Station before heading to the airport.

If your hotel is near one of these stations, you can check out, drop off your luggage at the station, and then enjoy your final few hours in the city without having to drag your bags around. It’s seriously convenient and stress-free.

❗️ Important: This service is only available during specific hours and with certain airlines. Be sure to check the official In-Town Check-In info page before you travel.

Free Hotel Shuttle Service

Beyond getting to the city quickly, the Airport Express also offers a free shuttle bus service to designated hotels.

As long as you have a valid Airport Express ticket, whether it’s one-way, round-trip, purchased with an Octopus Card, or booked online, you can take the complimentary shuttle from Kowloon or Hong Kong Station directly to select hotels.

No need to carry heavy bags around or search for directions, the bus drops you off right at the hotel entrance, which is a huge help for first-timers or travelers with seniors.

There are multiple shuttle routes covering areas like Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, Wan Chai, and Causeway Bay. Buses run approximately every 20–30 minutes.

It can be a little confusing at first though, at the Airport Station, there are no traditional ticket gates at the platform. You actually scan your QR code or Octopus Card only after getting off the train. If you’re using a QR code, make sure to turn up your phone’s brightness to make scanning easier.

On our way back to the airport, we were lucky enough to catch the limited-edition Panda-themed train, the decor was adorable, and kids would absolutely love it.
